Information session for potenial new councillors

With the postponement of the 2021 NSW Local Government Elections until December 4 this year, Tamworth Regional Council is running a second information session for anyone considering running as a candidate.

The first was held in July this year to give potential candidates the chance to find out more about what a councillor’s role involves.

Tamworth Regional Mayor Col Murray, who is retiring from local government after 17 years and is not seeking re-election, said another information session will be held on Thursday 21 October, 2021 at Ray Walsh House (437 Peel Street, Tamworth) in the Level 4 Function Room from 6pm to 7pm.

“It is possible following the postponement of the election due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there may be some more people who are now considering seeking election to Council,” he said.

“We wanted to ensure they also have the chance to know more about what is involved in serving the community as an elected representative.

“The work councillors do is not fully appreciated by many people in our community – it is a considerable time commitment and this information session will help anyone considering running to understand exactly what is involved.”

The Candidate Information Session will include details about the role of a councillor as set out in the NSW Local Government Act and other legislation, provide an overview of the Tamworth Regional Council Code of Conduct and an opportunity to ask questions. There will be some printed information available for attendees.

The Candidate Information Session is free but attendees must register by completing the online form at

Tamworth Regional Councillors approved a Mayoral and Councillor Induction and Professional Development Policy in November last year which includes the provision of a Candidate Information Session. The policy also includes an induction program for the newly-elected council and an ongoing professional development program.

The NSW Electoral Commission is accepting nominations for candidates until noon on 4 November, 2021.
