Recognition for outstanding local trainee

Barraba’s Jessica Lott was awarded the 2021 School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year for New England NSW last Friday evening.

Jessica is undertaking a Cert II in Agriculture with the stud operation, Bowen Pastoral Co. Bowen Pastoral company is a family run cattle stud in Barraba. Bowen has three studs producing Poll Hereford, Angus and Wagyu bulls, selling bulls across Australia. “Jessie has been keen to learn about all aspects of our operation from AI and pregnancy testing to machinery operation and fencing,” says Nick Peake from Bowen.

“Jessie approached us as a keen young lady looking to learn and expand her knowledge of the cattle stud operation and agriculture industry. We were more than happy to take her on as a trainee. She has shown a great interest in our business and learnt a lot along the way.”

Jessica grew up on Barraba property “Mountain Home” with parents Daniel and Carly Lott and her sisters. Carly says, “We are so proud of Jessie, she is dedicated to her studies and work commitments. This is a well deserved achievement for Jessie.” Dan adds, “The Peake family has supported Jessie throughout her traineeship journey and we are very grateful she has been given this opportunity.”

Jessica wants to pursue a career in either Animal Veterinary Science or Equine Physiotherapy. Jessica completes her formal training through TAFENSW and her HSC year at Barraba Central School, where she is School Vice-Captain.

Bowen Pastoral Co’s annual bull sale is on 15 July.
