On Saturday at the Barraba Golf Club two long serving and recently retired Barraba fire fighters were honoured with a luncheon.
Captain Peter Hancock and Deputy Ian Butler retired last month after a period of long and dedicated service to Fire & Rescue NSW.
The luncheon was attended by family and friends of Peter and Ian along with present and past fire fighters of Barraba Fire Station. Also attending were representatives of Fire & Rescue at Manilla, Tamworth and Armidale as well as deputy commissioner of FRNSW Rob McNeill (Sydney) and Superintendent Tom Cooper from Tamworth.
Master of ceremonies for the occasion was Acting Captain of Fire & Rescue Barraba Robert Sweeney who welcomed everyone to the special occasion to honour Peter Hancock and Ian Butler.
Robert detailed Peter and Ian’s time with FRNSW. Peter joined in June 1967 and has been captain for the past 28 years (54 years in total). Ian joined in March 1969 and was deputy captain for eight years (52 years service).
Peter and Ian were presented with framed certificates detailing their service with Fire & Rescue by Deputy Commissioner Rob McNeill who said that not only did they serve the community of Barraba but also the state of NSW.
Superintendent Tom Cooper also thanked Peter and Ian for their dedicated service to the people of NSW.
Prior to the presentation to Peter and Ian. Recently retired captain Peter Hancock presented a former fire fighter Peter (Scrappy) Gee (who retired last year) with a plaque to mark his 16 years with Fire & Rescue Barraba.
