In the ‘digital’ age, when anyone can hear any song at the press of a button, is it still possible for a musician to make a living through touring?
That’s the question Luke Morton, known as “Choppers Morton”, is setting out to answer as he launches his From the Big Smoke to the Bush tour at The Playhouse Hotel at 6.15 pm on Saturday 23 April.
A passionate student of guitar and vocals since boyhood, especially the styles of blues, folk and traditional Australian ballads, Luke took a job at a major Sydney booking agency, where he devoted 15 years to organising tours for other artists, including some of the biggest names in showbiz.
Occasionally he was able to play support for well-known bands such as The Divinyls, but this didn’t satisfy him. Four years ago, he quit his secure job and, with a stack of original songs in his back pocket, took his own act on the road. The gamble paid off, because since then he hasn’t stopped working. In 2019 alone, he performed in 130 different venues!
It’s this inspiring story of one man following his dream that Morton Choppers will share with us in From the Big Smoke to the Bush, via an evening of songs, poems, stories and jokes, all illustrated by big screen projections..
