Derek wins national award

Tamworth & Gunnedah Elders Rural Merchandise proved they were a cut above the rest by being presented with the National Branch Award for Elders recently.

And one of the key players in the rural firm gaining that achievement was former Attunga man Derek Abra who wears the cap of Branch Manager for Tamworth and Gunnedah. Derek though is quick to give his “hard working team” of around 10 staff accolades for a job well done.

“The award was basically judged on the growth of the business. We got it for the big increase – around 180 per cent I think – in sales, as well as doing the right thing and running the business successfully. It was a top team effort, everyone put in over 100 per cent effort. We topped the state here, then beat the other two finalists – Geraldton (WA) and Pakenham (Vic),” Derek said.

In his role as Branch Manager, Derek covers many kilometres between Tamworth and Gunnedah, either on the phone talking to farmers or having face-to-face meetings with them forecasting what they’ll need in regard to successful cropping.

“If they want to put a crop in, it’s up to us to work out what they’ll need, then make sure we can supply those needs,” Derek said.

Gaining awards though isn’t new to the team at Elders. Back in 2000 they were presented with the Team of the Year Award for the success of their business.

And with a dedicated team behind him, Derek is confident the business can defend its title next year.

“I know we’ve had a pretty good season so far, but sales are building up really well. So far this year, we’ve had a better run than we had at this time last year.”
