Comments on Council’s ‘Waste Wagon’ plan close soon

Council’s proposed ‘Waste Wagon’ plan is currently open for community feedback. Information about the trial of the proposed service is on public exhibition until Wednesday 14 September for community members to share their thoughts about the proposal with Council.

Under the proposal, community members can book for up to two cubic metres of approved types of waste to be collected from their kerb during a single pick-up. Council staff will use a utility towing a caged trailer to pick up the waste. Individual items must not be any heavier than 30kg and able to be lifted by two people.

The service costs a fee plus a waste disposal voucher. The proposal includes a scale of costs by location where residents located further from Tamworth pay more for the service. Households in the Urban Residential zone (Tamworth, Kootingal and Moonbi) will pay $25 plus hand over a waste voucher, Regional Centre Residential (Barraba, Manilla and Nundle) will pay $35 plus hand over a waste voucher, while Regional Remote Residential will pay $45 plus hand over a waste voucher.

Council justify the scale on a ‘user pays’ basis as they say everything will be delivered back to Tamworth waste facilities. A Waste Wagon with two staff costs around $130 per hour to operate. Those locations further from Tamworth therefore add distance and time to the task.

Reduced fees for the service will apply for those with a government issued pension card or disability card – the charge will be 50% of the standard cost.

To give feedback use Council’s website (haveyoursay.tamworth.nsw.gov.au/waste-wagon) or attend a Council office for assistance.
